We look for all kinds of skills, because we know it takes all kinds of people to protect the public. Problem solving, compassion, resilience, respect, courage and teamwork. These are the qualities we are looking for. We are always on the lookout for new Specials and volunteers, so if you think you might have the skills to serve get in touch or sign up for our job alerts.

Special constables

Special constables (or Specials as we often refer to them) and are a key part of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight police family. As a volunteer police officer you’ll wear the same uniform and carry the same powers and responsibilities as regular police officers. It’s a unique role providing you with the chance to work alongside regular officers, using the skills and experiences you already have while giving something back to the community you live in. Hours are flexible, but we ask that Specials offer their time for at least 16 hours a month. All Specials receive full initial and on-going training to gain knowledge of the law and further develop skills such as teamwork and problem solving.

Volunteers

Hundreds of people across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight volunteer in office-based and non-operational roles to help us to deliver a better service to the public. You might not even know you’ve got the skills we are looking for. You might play a key role supporting officers in Neighbourhood Policing Teams, join us as a youth cadet, become one of our growing network of Cyber Specials or work with us to improve standards of witness care or customer service. There are many ways to be there for your community as a police volunteer.

All we ask from you is for a regular commitment and some of your spare time. Volunteering can help enrich your social life and enable you to brush up on or maintain your existing skills. By giving back to your community and helping to protect our communities, volunteering gives you a real sense of achievement.
