The primary role of the department is to provide comprehensive training in the police use of firearms. This includes initial firearms training, refresher training, and specialist firearms training which will be developed and delivered to Authorised Firearms Officers (AFO) across the JOU as well as other forces, departments and agencies.
 

The Firearms Training department supports the operational armed response to incidents involving the criminal use of firearms. You will assist at a firearms operations by providing specialist rifle officers, additional personnel resources, weapons, specialist munitions and with the tactical planning of the incident.

Additional Requirements:

 

The normal hours of work will be 0800 – 1600 Monday to Friday; however these may be changed to accommodate specific training requirements.

The role holder may be required to work at other training venues across the JOU on occasions during working hours and must hold a current full drivers licence and be prepared to take and pass a Force driving course if required.

There is an expectation that the role holder will be available to cover periods of call out or duties when required and appropriate. The role holder is required to carry a mobile phone at all times on and off duty.

There is an expectation Officers will provide a minimum return of service of 2 years. The role holder must be selected, trained and have their competence assessed and reassessed in accordance with the NPFTC and the College of Policing APP Manual of Guidance on the Management, Command and Deployment of Armed Officers. (The NPFTC is a RESTRICTED document which can only be viewed by those authorised - Authorisation is granted by the College of Policing).

Essential Experience

 

To have significant experience in the police use of firearms and operations.

Essential Qualifications

 

Police Constable plus

  1. Qualified and competent as an Authorised Firearms Officer within the last 2 years.
  2. Qualified to the ARV role profile or be willing to obtain it.
  3. Having completed 12 months of CPD/MRT and subject to a successful review of their Firearms Training record by the CFI/DCFI.
  4. Completed or willing to attend and successfully complete a National Firearms Instructors Course and possess or willing to complete the Assessor Programme
  5. Completed or willing to attend and successfully complete a National Firearms Tactical Advisors Course
  6. First Aid at Work qualification (or equivalent) D13 advanced or be willing to obtain it.
  7. Full UK Driving Licence
     

 

  • You must be a serving police officer from a Home Office Force with no current performance or conduct concerns.
  • You must have successfully completed the two year probationary period and the Policing Diploma, or your forces equivalent qualification at the point of application.
  • Hold the appropriate qualifications for your rank.
