About Us:

THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF GRACE’S PASSION AND DEDICATION

The Environment & Communities Directorate in Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories. Where dedicated people like Grace are using their skills and passion to progress environmental action in the heart of London.

It was at university where Grace first started campaigning for improved recycling facilities, water refill stations, and other eco-friendly initiatives. When she saw the real difference people could make when they came together, she knew she wanted to dedicate her career to community action for the planet.

When she joined us as Principal Engagement Officer, Climate Emergency, she quickly established herself as a passionate advocate for community outreach, engaging various stakeholders across Westminster in the social causes, impacts and solutions to climate change, air pollution, and biodiversity loss.

Grace became a driving force behind our first Citizens’ Climate Assembly, which took place across two weekends in the summer of 2023. Fifty residents were chosen at random from across our diverse communities to come together, learn about the climate emergency, and deliberate how we overcome the barriers to becoming a net zero city by 2040. The assembly produced several recommendations which have informed the evolution of our Climate Emergency Action Plan. Due to the success of this initiative, we’re holding more assemblies to continue community involvement in local decision-making.

The Role:

As a Schools and Youth Engagement Officer, you can make your own powerful contribution to people and communities across Westminster. Joining our Integrated Gangs & Exploitation Unit (IGXU), you’ll help create safer communities, reduce gang violence, and improve outcomes for children and young people affected by violence.

Working in close partnership with schools, colleges, youth clubs and youth organisations, you’ll provide dedicated support, hold consultations and deliver workshops and training to pupils and staff. Where required, you’ll mentor young people one-to-one, prioritising early intervention and supporting them to access potentially life-changing services.

Acting as a key point of contact for Government departments, Ofsted and Violence Reduction Unit, you’ll be a source of expert advice and guidance, proactively identifying and escalating complex issues that require more senior output. Taking a sensitive, empathetic approach to everything you do, you’ll put vulnerable children and young people at the heart of your work.

Please refer to the Job Description for more information.

About You:

An established professional with experience of working in a community safety environment or with young people, you’ll be capable of building relationships with a range of multi-sector organisations.

Bringing knowledge of community safety, including Serious Youth Violence, Prevent, Anti Social Behaviour, and Violence Against Women and Girls, you’ll have experience of working with vulnerable young people who may be challenging to engage. You’ll also have delivered 1:1 sessions, presentations, workshops and training to varied audiences in a previous role.

On a personal level, you’ll be a true team player with strong communication, organisation and prioritisation skills. Empathetic, sensitive and passionate about improving outcomes for vulnerable young people, you’ll take a proactive, solutions-focused approach to managing conflicting priorities. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a supportive, highly commended team dedicated to reducing the effect of gang violence on young people, and to supercharge your career in the process.
