About Us:

THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF ANAKHA’S FRESH THINKING

Creativity isn’t something that only senior managers do. In Digital and Innovation at Westminster City Council, we expect it from everyone, including our newest recruits.

Enter Anakha, a graduate trainee, full of energy and fresh ideas. We welcomed her input to our Smart City initiatives, especially our Innovation Hub – a newly created space where staff, residents and businesses can meet, experiment and exchange ideas.

But it was what happened next that really made a difference. Anakha’s innovation space project was used to invite young people to help them find work through the Kickstart programme as well as to recruit young people to our Tech Lions initiative, and is regularly occupied by the Apprentice community.

We’re also inviting residents aged 11-19 from the Westminster Youth Council to the Hub to attend a fun ‘speed dating’ event, where they hear from different digital teams. We’ll continue to meet with them every week to keep them directly involved in our plans to ensure young people have a regular voice at the heart of the council. From the importance of electric vehicle charging points to new uses for tech, their insights about the kind of city they want to live in are central to our plans.

As for Anakha, she’s now moved into a permanent Project Manager role in the Digital and Innovation Smart City team. Supported by ongoing mentoring from colleagues, she’s already developing even bigger and better ideas.

The Role:

As a Dynamics Developer in our Software Engineering team, you can make your own powerful contribution by ensuring our CRM system is perfectly optimised to enhance every customer interaction.

Westminster’s residents, businesses and visitors are at the heart of our work. We know how important it is to be able to effectively communicate with them, so you will play a vital role in shaping and enhancing our Dynamics 365 CRM system by developing plugins, custom entities and workflows. Working with our Call Centre to understand what is important to both them and the people they are supporting, you will also develop and maintain a custom web API using C#/.NET and you will take responsibility for developing JavaScript and HTML web resources, while always adopting agile methodologies. From discovery to live, the software you deliver will consistently be of the highest quality, with service users at the heart of every decision and thought process.

As you will be part of our newly-established Digital and Innovation team, you will find a progressive environment that’s quite remarkable. That’s because we have the traditional responsibilities of an IT team, but this is enhanced by an increased focus on users and service design. Bringing a solution-focused approach to every challenge, you will therefore be encouraged to collaborate with our friendly and ambitious team to identify how things could be improved not just now, but in the future too. This will extend to supporting and mentoring more junior members of the team, helping them develop their skills and define the best possible products.

Please refer to the Job Description for more information.

About You:

Part of what makes this role so exciting is that it is a vital component to the success of every council directorate. As such, you will be embedded in a multidisciplinary product team that works with stakeholders from every service – so you could be tasked with actions impacting on health, social care, housing, highways, finance and more. You will therefore have great communication, influencing and relationship-building skills, and you will understand how to balance client, organisational and technical needs in a complex product-focused environment.

With an extensive knowledge of modern software and software development practise, you will be fluent in self-built, low code and outsourced services. Bringing an agile approach to every challenge, you have the capacity to lead software development teams, and as such you will have a deep knowledge of DevOps practise and culture. Comfortable working with APIs and microservice architecture, you will be able to build and test software in a range of languages and frameworks. Leading by example, you will enjoy supporting your colleagues in every project, and you will have the confidence to take responsibility for any decisions you have made without stealing their limelight.

Please note, we will only consider applications from candidates who have the right to work in the UK.
