About Us:

THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF KEITH’S TRANSFORMATIONAL WORK

Public Protection & Licensing in Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories. Where people like Keith and his team are passionate about keeping our borough clean, safe, healthy and free of pests.

Pest control might not sound like the most glamorous job, but to Keith it’s the best job in the world. As our Senior Pest Control Technician, it’s his task to see that Westminster is kept free of the sort of pests which can cause worry, fear, discomfort and - in the worst cases - illness. He and his dedicated team work tirelessly across the entire borough, from restaurants and cafés to parks and gardens, and from shops and offices to houses and flats.

Keith started his career in research and development for the private sector, before becoming a field biologist and then joining us here in Westminster. To begin with he was on a two year contract but when this was about to end he was asked to stay, and he’s been here ever since, working his way up the career ladder, and is now leading his team.

No two days are the same for him and the team, but the best ones are when they’re called out to help a family who are suffering from an infestation of - for example - mice, and this is not only making their lives a misery, but is creating unhealthy living conditions. But once the team have finished their work all of a sudden the family’s lives are transformed, they feel safer living in their own home, and can sleep peacefully at night without the worry discomfort and noise of tiny little feet scurrying around.

And on top of this, he believes that if you love your job, and are passionate about what you can achieve, you can build a fulfilling, rewarding and truly life-changing career at Westminster.

The Role:

As Anatomical Pathology Technologist (APT), you too can make a powerful contribution. You’ll take on a full range of mortuary activities, including assisting with Coronial Post-Mortem Examinations (under supervision where necessary).

You’ll be joining a small team of Anatomical Pathology Technologists working in a busy, high-profile borough in central London. We cover a variety of casework, including community, hospital and forensic cases. The mortuary also acts as a Designated Disaster Mortuary, during a mass fatality incident within our coronial jurisdiction.

As an APT, you’ll assist in the administrative arrangements for the reception of bodies into the mortuary, the release for burial or cremation and associated activities. Plus, you’ll facilitate and arrange formal viewings for the Coroner’s Service, in accordance with local standard operating procedures. You will work under the organisation’s Human Tissue Authority (HTA) licence, supporting the Designated Individual (DI) in ensuring all activities meet legal and regulatory standards. We’re keen to be as safe as can be through excellent record keeping, staying compliant with health and safety policies, and ensuring that we’re up to date on new relevant legislation.

As part of our team, you’ll ensure that service delivery is covered at all times and participate in the out of hours services and on-call system (if qualified).

As a team, it’s our top priority that deceased people are treated with dignity and care. We ensure that relatives are considered and supported at all times. If you have a passion for mortuary, this an excellent opportunity to become part of a team of experienced Anatomical Pathology Technologists.

Please refer to the Job Description for more information.

About You:

We’re looking for someone with some mortuary case work experience, including facilitating in post-mortem examinations. You’ll also have completed eviscerations and reconstructions. Plus, you’re able to write concise reports on case work, both in writing and computerised.

To work well here, you’ll have planned, delivered and coordinated workloads and projects before. You’re comfortable working unsupervised in accordance with agreed work programmes. In all instances, you understand how and are committed to working safely.

You’re able to communicate at all levels and maintain a sharp customer focus in all that you do.

To be eligible, you’ll have an RSPH Level 3 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology – or are a trainee undertaking one. A pre 2015 RSPH Certificate and Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology also works for us.
