It doesn’t matter where you’ve been, or where you’re going, it’s about the journey.

Can you help us deliver a net-zero transport system by 2040?

We’re encouraging people to change the way they travel, delivering a shift away from the car towards sustainable and public transport.

We’re seeking passionate people who are inspired to deliver positive change to our local residents. You’ll work closely with the Area Travel Plan Technical Leads to provide support on a range of projects, including developing transport plans, delivering transport planning services, leading on consultations, responding to planning applications and presenting to a range of forums including Cabinet.

From Ashley Hayden, Area Travel Plans Lead – Hiring Manager:

I am creating a new team at Oxfordshire County Council (OCC), responsible for delivering local transport plans across the County. This will be a great opportunity for you to take that next step in your career working for a friendly, collaborative and progressive organisation. One of the things I enjoy the most about this role is the ability to shape places and spaces – something which led me to work for OCC and in Local Government. The Area Travel Plans will support the ambitious targets of the Council’s Local Transport and Connectivity Plan so there has never been a more exciting time to join the team. I look forward to reading your application.

About us

Our team is brand-new working within the wider Environment and Place directorate. You’ll work collaboratively across various teams within the Council, with Councillors and external partners and stakeholders. You’ll need to be familiar with managing a complex workload, working in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Our Area Travel Plans (ATPs) team specialises in delivering bespoke localised transport plans which are instrumental to delivering upon the ambitions of Oxfordshire’s recently adopted Local Transport and Connectivity Plan (LCTP). These will guide future scheme development, funding bids, responses to planning applications, developer contributions and will support and enable sustainable growth.

You’ll be joining a forward-thinking organisation that’s looking to make a real difference to people’s lives and the communities that work, live and enjoy these spaces and places. Oxfordshire continues to innovate; being a leader of new ideas to help support a shift away from car use towards active/sustainable travel.

We're moving fast!

  • Last year, we supported the introduction of 159 battery electric buses to make public transport more accessible and reduce emissions, which are now being rolled out.
  • We plan to trial six traffic filters in Oxford later this year to help reduce bus journey times by at least 10 per cent and make walking and cycling safer.
  • We launched our Vision Zero programme to eliminate all deaths and serious injuries from road traffic collisions in Oxfordshire by 2050.

About you

To be successful in this role you need to be educated to A Level (RFQ Level 3) or equivalent in a related subject, combining a basic understanding of and interest in Transport Planning and Development Planning.  You will need to be able to manage your own workload and have a good level of verbal and written communication skills.
