The Role:
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) have an exciting opportunity for a Driver Trainer to join our highly skilled, professional team on a full-time, permanent basis.
You will be part of a small specialist team responsible for delivering the highest standards of Driver Training across the HIWFRS fleet. Your role ensures that Firefighters, Fire Officers, and Support Colleagues can carry out their duties safely, while reducing risk to both our communities and our staff.
HIWFRS was formed in April 2021 following the combination of two Fire and Rescue Services. We are one of the busiest services in the country, serving a population of nearly two million people across major cities, rural areas, and two national parks. We employ approximately 1,500 people across our Wholetime, On-Call, and Support functions.
This role includes a 10% enhanced pay allowance to reflect the enhanced responsibilities, flexibility, and requirement to deliver ERD training outside of core hours, including occasional evenings.
What you’ll do:
Provide training and assessment in:
- Specialist Fire Appliances and 4×4 off-road driving.
- Emergency Response Driving in Fire Appliances.
- Emergency Response Driving in Light Vehicles.
- Design and deliver new driving courses as directed by the Driver Training Supervisor.
- LGV Category C Licence acquisition courses.
- Adapt training materials to meet specific learner or organisational needs, with appropriate approval.
- Observe and support student development throughout training.
- Create a positive and inclusive learning environment using varied instructional techniques.
- Attend relevant development courses, NFCC seminars and meetings.
- Accurately record student performance in line with Service procedures, national legislation, and Awarding Body requirements.
- Collect and report learner feedback to support continuous course improvement.
- Conduct basic safety checks and routine maintenance on training vehicles to ensure safety and roadworthiness.
What we’re looking for:
- Applicants must hold a Full LGV Category C Licence and have a minimum of 5 years of LGV driving experience, in line with Fire Standards and the Emergency Response Driving Framework requirements.
- Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) qualification or actively working towards it (desirable but not essential).
- Experience of Emergency Response Driving (desirable but not essential).
- Ability to demonstrate the Service’s values in daily practice.
- Strong instructional, communication, and assessment skills.
- A professional and flexible approach to working patterns and training delivery.
