Could you be an on-call firefighter?

Do you live or work in a rural community?  Could you have the time and commitment to help protect that community?  If so, you might be just what we’re looking for.

The women and men who work as on-call firefighters provide our retained duty system, an essential part of our emergency service. They come from every walk of life and include shopkeepers, builders, plumbers, farmers, secretaries, engineers and directors of companies, together with people who are not currently employed.

There is no doubt it is a demanding role, but in return offers the chance to make a real contribution in this vital service. You will form close working relationships with the other members of the team, essential when dealing with an emergency, and further enhanced by other aspects of the role such as attending community events or enjoying the active social scene. You will truly become an ambassador for our Service.

Previous experience

You don’t need previous experience as we provide a comprehensive training programme. What is important is that you are enthusiastic and can meet certain essential requirements. Crucially, you must be able to reach the fire station quickly and safely after being alerted to an incident.  This can be physically demanding and therefore physical fitness is of utmost importance.

How much commitment would you need to give, and what do you get in return?

On average, you could be called out two or three times a week for one hour. If you can’t be available all of the time it’s not a problem; we are particularly keen to hear from people who are available during weekdays. You will also be required to attend a training session each week.

In return you will be well paid and receive thorough training enabling you to achieve a Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) licence, a certificate in First Aid, plus all there is to know about emergency situations.

Are you an employer thinking of releasing a member of your staff to become an on-call firefighter?
