Salary Range: £17,711 per annum

Work Location: Riverside Centre for Outdoor Learning, Oxford

Hours per week: 37 (including evenings, weekend work and overnights)

Contract type: Temporary for 18 months

The Riverside Centre for Outdoor Learning is seeking a motivated individual to join the Centre in an apprenticeship role. The ideal candidate is expected to have some experience of activity leadership and a clear understanding of the benefits of outdoor learning.


As an Outdoor Education Apprentice you will support the Riverside team to deliver high quality and tailored outdoor learning activities for vulnerable young people and their families from across Oxfordshire. You will also assist with the day to day routines and maintenance at the Centre. 


During the course of the apprenticeship you will be given increasing responsibility, with appropriate support, to lead and teach outdoor activity sessions to all people regardless of ability. 


As part of the apprenticeship you will also have the opportunity to gain National Governing Body Awards dependent upon the requirements of the employer and your own aspirations. Also, valuable experience working in a highly skilled and creative environment. 


You will be required to produce and keep an apprenticeship portfolio, making sure that all targets are achieved. This will include attendance at training events, courses and workshops as arranged by the employer and training provider. It will also require a personal commitment to reasonable private study and to being observed and assessed in the workplace. To make the most from this training position, personal commitment to self-development to consolidate skills will be required.  


Essential Criteria:

  • Numeracy and literacy skills at level 2 (equivalent to GCSE A*-C)
  • A Level 2 qualification in Outdoor Education and/or an Outdoor qualification from any National Governing Body (e.g. NICAS/MTA climbing, walking or BC/BSUPA paddlesports, CTC/MIAS Mountain biking)
