Start strong. Join us in Oxfordshire:

  • a great place to live and work
  • a great place to develop your social work career
  • a great place to make a real difference!
.

We are looking for ambitious, newly qualified social workers to kick start their careers with Oxfordshire County Council’s Assessed & Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) programme which, through our Social Care Academy, will give you access to fantastic learning, professional development and career progression opportunities.

You will join an inspiring group of social workers and have access to an ASYE programme that is tailored to your individual needs. We will provide a supported induction, with protected time at our Academy before you start working with families! You will have the opportunity to gain a broad range of statutory social work experience – everything you need to give your career a strong start. We know that your first year can be daunting, but we will be with you every step of the way by offering outstanding support when it is needed.

In Oxfordshire, you will have an opportunity to learn in a fast-paced, positive, safe and supportive learning environment. It’s a place where you’ll be able to be curious, reflect and ask when you don’t know! We are committed to continual learning and development, and of course, safeguarding vulnerable children is our priority.

Our Social Care Academy is designed to make Oxfordshire a centre of excellence for children’s social care and improve outcomes for children and families. It’s a place where social workers can excel and grow – just like our two Deputy Directors who started with us as a social worker and team manager respectively!

You’ll be joining us at a hugely exciting time as we introduce a transformational new practice model to Children’s Services – Family Safeguarding Plus.  This practice model uses a strengths-based approach, with motivational interviewing at its heart, to help families achieve great outcomes. You’ll join part of a multi-disciplinary team comprised of specialist adult workers as well as children’s social workers, to tackle parental difficulties. The model will reduce the number of social workers children and families work with, which will in turn help build stronger, more effective relationships that can engender sustainable change.

At a time when many local authorities are seeing financial cuts, Oxfordshire is making significant investments into children’s social care, specifically for frontline services and our new practice model. Our priority is to reduce caseloads and paperwork to allow social workers to spend more time with children and families, who are at the heart of everything we do.

One of our Social Workers who did their AYSE with Oxfordshire says:

“I felt that the council valued us by investing in this programme, designed just for us, where we could safely practise what I had learned at university and during our days in the Academy and teams, and talk honestly about issues that came up.

“It was very helpful to have a group of people all start together and that really eased my start into the teams. We got to know each other well in those first weeks and we still rely on each other.”

Successful applicants will:

  • Be qualified and Social Work England registered (or in process of)
  • Have good communication skills, with the ability to build relationships, engage with children and families
  • Have the ability to produce concise, effective and accurate written work
  • Be resilient, with the ability to manage the emotional impact of the work, actively making use of appropriate support
  • Be required to travel as part of the role as we cover locations throughout rural parts of the county

In return, we can offer you:
