The Role:
As part of Hampshire County Council, the Countryside Service is responsible for managing Hampshire’s public rights of way network, which extends for over 2,800 miles across a diverse landscape that includes the South Downs, the New Forest and the Solent. The Council’s statutory duties include maintaining the Definitive Map and Statement - the legal record of public rights of way.
The Countryside Service is recruiting a Definitive Map Officer to assist with its wide programme of work. This interesting and varied role includes investigating applications to modify the Definitive Map, a process which requires the research and analysis of a wide range of historic documents and witness evidence. Reporting to the Senior Definitive Map Officer, the postholder will gather and analyse the evidence, and prepare and present detailed reports to committee and senior management. Where necessary, they will also represent the County Council at public hearings and inquiries. The role involves managing a varied caseload and the allocation of work to administrative staff.
We are seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual to join our dedicated, supportive and friendly team. The successful applicant should be educated to degree level or have previous experience of working in public rights of way. The post is a hybrid role, split between home and our Winchester office. Some infrequent travel will be necessary for site meetings and survey work.
