At Hampshire Music Service, we believe in the transformative power of music. Our mission is to create an inclusive culture of music education that is challenging, engaging, and accessible to all—regardless of background, gender, race, or learning needs. Through strong partnerships, we aim to ensure every child has the opportunity to participate in and excel through music.
We are looking for an inspiring and experienced County Ensemble Tutor to join the Hampshire County Jazz Centre. This is an exciting opportunity for a passionate music educator with a strong background in jazz to help shape the musical journeys of young people across the county.
In this role, you will lead high-quality rehearsals and performances, nurture young musicians, and contribute to Hampshire’s vibrant music education community. Your work will support the development of musical skills, creativity, and confidence in a supportive and inclusive environment.
If you are committed to excellence in music education and have the energy and expertise to inspire the next generation of jazz musicians, we would love to hear from you.
The Role:
Ensembles provide an important role within Hampshire Music Education Hub. Our ensembles are highly regarded locally, nationally, and internationally. We know that, for many, ensembles are a safe space to belong, flourish, and shine where friendships and musical memories are formed that last a lifetime. We strive to be an inclusive Hub, celebrating all music genres and providing opportunities for children and young people. Our ensembles are highly valued by Hampshire County Council, recognising Hampshire Music Service as a centre of excellence in musical education.
What you’ll do:
- Training and rehearsal the ensemble to a high musical standard through 54.8 hours of rehearsal over the year.
- Directing the ensemble in three performances across the academic year.
- Working alongside other HMS ensemble directors in shared performances, workshops and opportunities to develop close links that enable progression routes for pupils.
- Attending meetings of ensemble staff as appropriate.
- Ensure that the policies and requirements of HMS and HCC are met regarding health and safety, GDPR, and safeguarding.
- Attend rehearsals in time before members arrive, and leave after they have been collected, delegating this role if/as necessary.
- Being fully accountable for the musical standards and outcomes of the ensemble
- Ensure effective administration, in line with HMS processes, in all aspects of their ensemble.
What we’re looking for:
- Strong experience of tutoring youth ensembles is highly desirable.
- Ability to programme appropriate repertoire that enables excellent engagement and progression from all members of the ensemble.
- A strong understanding of the role that the ensemble has to support the technical and musical development of its members.
- Have the musical expertise to interpret, rehearse, and deliver authentic and credible performances of repertoire appropriate to the standard of this ensemble and require a highly analytical and knowledgeable approach. This needs to be carefully balanced with strong interpersonal skills that will inspire a large group of young musicians.
- Experience of working with young musicians within an ensemble setting, including the management of residential visits and overseas tours.
- Excellent communication skills.
- The ability to cope well under pressure.
Why join us?
- Be part of a nationally recognised centre of excellence in music education
- Work in a supportive, inclusive, and creative environment
- Make a lasting impact on the lives of young musicians
- Opportunities for professional development and collaboration
