Work Location: Dame Mary Fagan House, Basingstoke
Hours per week: 22.5
Contract Type: Temporary until 27 March 2026 (term-time only)

The Role:
As a Bilingual Assistant, you will help children and young people from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) heritages in Hampshire schools, including those learning English as an Additional Language (EAL), to improve their educational outcomes and wellbeing. This may include working with children and young people who are refugees/Separated Minors (UASC).
This position requires the successful candidate to be fully proficient in Malayalam. It is desirable - though not essential - to also have skills in at least one of the following languages: Tamil, Telegu, Bengali.
You will use your bilingual skills to support pupils in all school phases from Reception to Year 11. In groups and on a one-to-one basis, you will support them to access the mainstream curriculum and to realise their aspirations for their futures. Your support will help them engage in their education, raise their attainment and ensure that the children’s cultures and languages are valued in school.
You will collect background information about each child, advise teachers of children's first language development and abilities and inform them of areas where a child may need additional support, for example if they are experiencing the impact of trauma, racist abuse or bullying. Acting as an interpreter in meetings with parents, you will support successful home-school communication.
You will be required to travel to various locations within Hampshire (and the Isle of Wight or other local authority), and it is essential that you have a current drivers’ licence and access to a reliable vehicle on a regular basis.
