An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Compliance Support Officer to join our Highways, Engineering and Transport (HET) team at Hampshire County Council.

Are you organised, practical and confident working with people? This role offers the chance to make a real difference by supporting safe, effective working across a wide range of operational environments. You’ll join a supportive team and receive full training and a structured induction, allowing you to develop your knowledge and confidence over time.

The Role:

Playing a key part in supporting health and safety activity across Highways, Engineering and Transport, you will work closely with managers and operational teams, helping ensure risks are identified, controls are practical, and procedures are understood and applied. The role combines site visits with office and hybrid working, offering real variety.

You don’t need prior experience in health and safety, highways or engineering. What matters most is your ability to work positively with others, organise your workload and see tasks through to completion.

What you’ll do:

In this role, you’ll work closely with managers and teams to support the practical application of health and safety legislation, policies and best practice across the organisation. You’ll be responsible for maintaining clear and workable health and safety procedures, along with accurate records and action plans that support compliance and continuous improvement.

Through regular inspections, audits and investigations, you’ll collaborate with teams to identify risks and agree meaningful improvements, providing clear, proportionate advice that enables safe and effective working. You will also help identify health and safety training needs and support the delivery of training, while building positive, effective working relationships with a wide range of operational teams.

A key part of the role will be promoting a consistent and positive safety culture, managing actions, records and deadlines efficiently, and balancing site-based activity with office and home working to meet operational needs.

What we’re looking for:

  • Well organised and able to manage competing priorities
  • Communicates clearly and confidently with a wide range of people
  • Can explain technical or procedural information in an accessible way
  • Enjoys influencing positive change and working collaboratively
  • Takes pride in completing tasks thoroughly and on time

Experience in health and safety, highways, engineering or construction would be beneficial, but is not essential as full training will be provided.

Why join us?

  • A varied role with real impact on people’s safety and wellbeing
  • Flexible and hybrid working arrangements that support work-life balance, including part-time options
  • Training, development and support to help you grow into the role
  • Access learning and development opportunities, including potential apprenticeship pathways
  • Be part of a supportive, inclusive workplace where everyone is valued

Our benefits package includes generous holiday entitlement, a local government pension scheme, flexible working options, family friendly policies, travel discounts and more.

We’re proud of our inclusive culture and are committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels welcome, respected and able to do their best.
