Job Details:

Job Reference: HCC623251
Salary Range: £27,780 - £30,564 per annum
Work Location: The Basingstoke Canal Centre, Mytchett
Hours per week: 37
Contract Type: Permanent
Closing Date: 22 March 2026

Passionate about managing our precious inland waterways for public access, navigation and conservation? We are looking for a dynamic self-starter to join our small team managing the Basingstoke Canal.

The Role:

The 32-mile-long Basingstoke Canal is a largely tree lined and tranquil navigable waterway providing an important recreational resource both on the towpath and on the water. Crossing through Hampshire and Surrey, it is a designated SSSI. With 29 Locks and numerous bridges, structures and embankments, the 230-year-old canal demands constant attention.

This role is responsible for delivering a planned programme of practical, ecological, recreational, safety, administrative and business-related activities to ensure the effective, high‑quality management of the Basingstoke Canal and to provide an excellent service to the public.

What you’ll do:

The Waterway Ranger is a key role in managing the canal safely. The postholder will deliver and help develop a diverse programme of tasks including practical estate maintenance work, managing water levels, operating locks, regular surveys and asset inspections supported by administration activities such as updating work and asset records and H&S documentation. The post holder will regularly work alongside volunteers and engage with the public as the face of the organisation.

The post is based at the Basingstoke Canal Centre at Mytchett, near Camberley, Surrey but the post holder will be outdoors on the canal for a significant proportion of the time.

The post holder will also be responsible for out of hours response for the Canal on a duty rota (for which additional allowances are payable) – this will usually be for one week in every 5, including a weekend but may be as frequent as one week in every 3.

What we’re looking for:

The role requires either a degree or HND supported by substantial practical experience, or alternatively a strong background built through extensive work in fields such as countryside or environmental management, estate management, or civil engineering.

The ability to swim confidently is essential. Candidates should demonstrate solid countryside or land management experience, with any knowledge of inland waterways or civil engineering considered beneficial. Strong written and verbal communication skills are important, along with the ability to work independently while also contributing effectively within a team.

As the position involves regular outdoor physical activity throughout the year and in all weather conditions, applicants must be physically capable and willing to undertake these tasks. Proficiency in common IT tools such as Word and Excel is required, and familiarity with GIS packages or CAMS would be an advantage.
