About Us:

Westminster is faced with a complex challenge. Millions of people flock to the area every year to enjoy our spectacular Christmas lights, summer gigs, seasonal festivals and 24/7 social life. It is our job (and our pleasure) to support this unique side of London. But so too is it our job to support the hundreds of people who have come to London in search of a better life, only to end up sleeping on the streets. And while it is indeed a deeply complex challenge, it is one that our Joint Homelessness Team (JHT) are committed to meeting. In fact, the JHT are a vital part of Westminster’s rough sleeping policy. Helping some of Westminster’s most vulnerable individuals get off the streets and into accommodation, they afford these people the chance of greater independence and improved mental health. And as a senior member of the team, your input and ideas could transform even more lives.

The Role:

Playing a vital role in the well-regarded JHT management team, you will be instrumental in helping us develop this important service and manage the sometimes competing demands of the key stakeholders and commissioners. At a time of tight resources and high pressure on services, we think creatively to make the best use of our facilities and resources, including forging close relationships with other partner organisations. You will therefore find well-established partnerships with third sector agencies, providing you with the perfect backdrop against which to make your mark.

On a day-to-day basis, you will use your mental health expertise to lead a team of five Social Workers, conducting some street outreach sessions and ensuring the highest standards of care are being delivered. Seeing to it that the team’s Mental Health Act work is carried out to a high standard, you will conduct assessments and devise interventions, ensuring a valuable community service is being delivered to those who need mental health support.

For further information please refer to the Job Description

About You:

As a practising AMHP (or having recently practiced as one) with HCPC registration, you will have significant experience of working as a Social Worker and AMHP in a mental health service. Experienced in working with the homeless community, you will be well-versed in all relevant legislation and codes of practice, and you will be fluent in safeguarding issues. Comfortable managing staff in a high-pressure environment, you will need strong leadership and communication skills with the capacity to make decisions and manage risk. A good understanding of mental health disorders is essential, and you will be experienced working with distressed individuals. With the flexibility to conduct out-of-hours outreach sessions, you will combine professionalism with an empathic approach.

The Council and its partners are committed to achieving diverse shortlists for all vacancies at Band 4 or above to support our desire to increase the number of staff from underrepresented groups in our workforce. If you are from a black, Asian and minority ethnic background (BAME), we invite you to self-declare this to the hiring manager as part of our positive action commitments.

What We Offer:

Westminster City Council is a unique organisation in which to pursue your ambitions. Benefitting from highly developed training opportunities and excellent career progression within the council, we pride ourselves on helping our employees be the best they possibly can be. And while your career development is vitally important to us – so too is your wellbeing. As such, you will find an exceptional work/life balance, succinctly enhanced by generous annual leave and access to the local government pension scheme. Furthermore, you will find great friendship and support amongst the team, with a collective commitment to helping each other achieve our goals. Join us, and discover why so many Westminster employees are excited about what the future holds for them here.
