An experienced and highly motivated teacher of the visually impaired is required from September 2019.  This is an exciting opportunity to join Oxfordshire’s Visual Impairment Team in supporting the inclusion of pupils who have a visual impairment into educational settings and schools across the county.


Knowledge of teaching children with visual impairment or other special educational needs is essential, as is recent teaching experience in either mainstream or special education.


We are seeking a highly effective teacher with a good ability to plan, monitor and review the impact of teaching interventions towards agreed learning outcomes.


You must have the ability to travel between schools, for which a mileage allowance is paid.

Job Purpose:

To provide specialist teaching support, intervention and advice to identified children with visual impairment, their families and educational settings / schools across Oxfordshire.

Role Responsibilities:

- Undertake responsibility for managing a caseload area of pupils with varying degrees of visual impairment, which may include children and young people dependent on Braille use.

- To be responsible for offering advice and support to all concerned with children who have a significant visual impairment.

- To visit visually impaired children attending any phase of mainstream education and in special school, to assess and offer appropriate advisory and teaching support, including the delivery of in-service training to staff.

- To work with the families of pre-school children with visual impairment following the principles of Early Support and offering families informed choice.

- To maintain files on individual children and young people

- To collate and discuss such information with the Countywide Lead for Visual Impairment during case reviews.

- To be responsible for up-dating personal information in respect of curriculum development and learning outcomes.

- To disseminate this information and its implications for the child or young person with visual impairment to professional colleagues working with the children, young people and their families.

- To support Education Heath Care Planning meetings as well as annual review and transition meetings. 

- To contribute to the development of a personalised learning programme of interventions to support the child or young person’s progress towards the agreed outcomes arising from such reviews.

- To compile written reports on aspects of the child or young person’s social, emotional, visual skills, educational progress and development.

- To share responsibility for monitoring and evaluating the impact of such programmes and to liaise with the Countywide Lead  for Visual Impairment / Specialist Manager / SENCo on outcomes.

- To advise school staff on the educational management of visually impaired pupils in early years settings, mainstream and special schools.

- To advise on the need for specialist equipment and its use in the school environment, ensuring appropriate use and maintenance.

- To provide guidance and support to all the families of children and young people with visual impairment on your caseload as appropriate.

- To contribute to assessment procedures, statutory and non-statutory, and providing advice on appropriate provision for children and young people with visual impairment.

- To contribute to the training of teaching assistants and to programmes of awareness raising in mainstream and special schools.

- To create individual teaching programmes, monitoring outcomes and maintaining records of progress.

- Undertake other appropriate tasks as may be requested by the Director for Children Education and Families or his/her representative.


Selection Criteria - Essential:

Educational achievements, Qualifications, Training and Knowledge:

  • Qualified Teacher Status.
  • Mandatory training in Visual Impairment (DfE approved) or prepared to train as a Qualified Teacher of the Visually Impaired (QTVI).
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Knowledge of working with visually impaired children or children with special educational needs
  • A working knowledge of current national initiatives in education


  • Recent and relevant experience teaching children with SEN in a range of mainstream or specialist settings, ideally across more than one key stage.
  • Wide, detailed and experience based SEN knowledge encompassing learning styles, methods, approaches, strategies and interventions used for teaching children with special educational needs.
  • Experience of delivering high quality coaching, mentoring and in-service training.

Job related aptitude and skills:

  • Highly effective as a teacher with a good ability to plan, monitor and review the impact of teaching interventions towards agreed learning outcomes.
  • Good ICT skills competency.
  • Ability to differentiate/adapt programmes of study to meet individual learning needs.

Personal Qualities:

  • Determined, resilient, reflective, creative and solution focussed; able to remain positive in the face of professional challenges.
  • Outstanding communication skills, both face to face and in writing and a proven ability to use these to inspire, empower and influence others working effectively as part of a team with a family centred approach.
  • Organised and systemic approach to work demonstrating an ability to

Special Requirements:

  • Ability to travel between educational settings.
Selection Criteria - Desirable:

Educational achievements, Qualifications, Training and Knowledge:

  • Additional post graduate training in Visual Impairment and/or SEN.
  • Continuing Professional Development relating to Visual Impairment.
  • Up-to-date experience of preparing and delivery of INSET to a variety of educational and/or voluntary agencies, supported by appropriate material, handouts, etc.
  • Knowledge of the Early Support Programme



  • Experience of working with children with visual impairment
  • Experience of teaching children with Special Educational Needs.
  • Experience of using ICT to support children with Special Educational Needs.
  • Recent experience of preparing and delivery of INSET to a variety of educational and/or voluntary agencies, supported by appropriate material, hand-outs, etc.
  • Experience of Early Year’s support

Job related aptitude and skills:

  • Ability to contribute to team developments and broader organisational goals.

Special Requirements:

  • A driving licence and car for use in the course of outreach visits.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety requirements when working in an outreach setting.
