Support children with special educational needs getting to and from school

Help children with special educational needs (SEN) get to and from school and ensure they have the opportunity to learn, play and make new friends.

If you can spare a few hours in the morning and afternoon, you’ll give them the chance to make the most of their day. You’ll also be able to enjoy the school holidays as this is a term time only post.

You won’t need your own transport, and you won’t need to drive.

Casual work will be offered initially with the potential of becoming permanent in time.

What you’ll do:
•    Supervise children with SEN from home to school, ensuring they are safely and securely strapped in, in line with the law.
•    Ensure the children’s behaviour does not endanger yourself or others.
•    Calm children using techniques including empathy, distraction, listening and understanding special needs.
•    Diffuse difficult situations, including retrieving runaways.
•    Take responsibility for health & safety, carrying out appropriate first aid and manual handling.
•    Report any transport/safety issues to enable action to be taken.
•    Advise the Home to School Transport Team of Operational issues i.e. late, unsafe transport.
•    Provide up to date information on the children’s needs and behaviour to the Home to School Transport team.
•    Act on written information given for the allocated school run.

What you’ll need:
•    Experience of dealing with children (e.g. looking after children) and awareness of special educational needs for children.
•    Ability to communicate effectively with children and transport providers (e.g. using appropriate language or communication method for child’s abilities).
•    Ability to deal with unexpected/difficult situations (e.g. sudden illness of a child/conflict).
•    Ability to work without close supervision.
•    Good level of agility (e.g. to catch up with a runaway child/undertake First Aid duties).
•    Ability to undertake manual handling duties.
•    Must be able to wear seat belt/restraint on school transport.

Working conditions:
•    Manual handling of items and people over 10kg on a daily basis.
•    Direct supervision of children, including children with highly complex needs.
•    Physical behaviour management techniques (Team Teach).
•    Potential verbal abuse and/or physical aggression.
•    Requirement to wear a reflective jacket, may require using non-latex gloves.
•    Potential biological hazards and/or working with people with infection, and contact with human bodily fluids.
