Could you supervise a busy kitchen team to provide fresh and nutritious meals to primary school pupils and staff?

As a Mobile Catering Assistant you’ll be required to travel to various primary schools in the area to provide cover as required. Often you’ll be contacted in the morning and advised which school you are required to attend that day. It is essential that you have your own transport insured for business use and you must be able to fulfil the travel requirements of the role.

As a Cook Supervisor in a busy primary school kitchen, you’ll lead a team of Catering Assistants to prepare, cook and serve lunch to pupils. You’ll also carry out other kitchen tasks, including cleaning, and setting up and clearing the school dining hall.

 

In this varied role you will:

 

Lead the food preparation and cooking, following portion control guidelines and special dietary requirements

 

Ensure eating areas are set up and cleared away, and that daily / weekly cleaning rotas are carried out effectively

 

Ensure the kitchen has sufficient stock of foods, cleaning materials and disposables

 

Manage the kitchen administration, including calculating meal costs, completing employment and health and safety paperwork, and monitoring the unit’s performance

 

Welcome customer feedback, and work with your team and the District Manager to maintain high standards

 

Assist the District Manager with the induction and development of staff

 

Handle cash on occasions, following our strict guidelines

 

Ensure all health and safety, food safety and hygiene procedures are followed

Experience of working in a similar catering environment is essential. Serving lunch on time is crucial, so you must be comfortable working at a fast pace. You’ll be physically able to lift all the equipment, and at ease with a hot, busy and at times noisy environment.

 

As part of our pre-employment checks, you’ll be asked to complete a confidential medical questionnaire. It is screened by our Occupational Health Department, who will ensure that you are medically fit for this role. The post is also subject to a criminal records check, called an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Job Purpose:

Under the direction of the Line Manager, help prepare, cook, serve and pack (where required) food and drink as appropriate, and deliver/ serve to customers at the correct time.  In addition, carry out general cleaning duties.

Role Responsibilities:

Food preparation and cooking of meals:  Help prepare, as directed by the line manager, the required number of food products, following specified menu/special dietary requirements.

 

Setting up and clearing away of dining hall/ restaurant: Within strict time limitation, set up required number of tables/ chairs for dinner period within the school hall. At the end of service clear furniture and sweep hall ready for immediate school use. 

 

Serving/customer liaison:  Under supervision and direction serve food and drink where appropriate, speedily, courteously and following specified portion control guidelines and special dietary requirements. Positively encourage children to try a variety of food. Handle cash, where necessary, following strict guidelines

 

Kitchen cleaning rota and general washing up:   Manually wash up all eating utensils and equipment, sterilising where required, following set guidelines, or use dishwasher where appropriate. Complete cleaning duties, following daily and weekly rotas, to ensure health and safety and hygiene standards are maintained.

 

Stock control/receipt of deliveries:  Put away deliveries as instructed, ensuring correct stock rotation and quality control guidelines. Receive deliveries, when directed by unit supervisor, carrying out quantity, temperature and quality checks.

 

Corporate and statutory initiatives – equalities / health and safety / e-government/ sustainability:  Ensure adherence to health and safety, food safety and hygiene procedures.

Role Requirements:

Essential knowledge skills and experience:

Physically able to lift service and kitchen equipment

 

Desirable knowledge skills and experience:

Experience of working in a relevant catering environment

Working Conditions:

Chairs are stored in stacks of 8 and moved to dining room/storage area.

Tables are moved to dining room and erected where appropriate.

Frequent bending and lifting

Washing up. Industrial height low sinks, slip hazards.

Exposure to noise levels during cooking/service (e.g. Mechanical extraction). 

Exposure to heat through ovens/deep fat fryers/hot cupboards.

Exposure to chemicals with irritant classification.

Exposure to food products which may be irritants (tomatoes, potatoes, onions, garlic, fruits, lettuce)

Use of knives

Lone working early morning (for unit supervisor / manager posts).

Work can be at a fast pace

Temperature variants – kitchens can be hot in summer and cold in winter
