Applications are invited from substantive Constables who are qualified to ARV standard as AFOs for these challenging and rewarding posts within the JOU Firearms Department. The purpose of the role is to deliver a highly effective response to firearms incidents and support to Local Policing.

 

Main duties include:

  • Providing operational response at firearms incidents.
  • Performing duties in line with the JOU Delivery Plan, including support to local policing in line with force priorities.

 

Posting will be subject to the following:

  1. Passing the interview./ assessment process
  2. Passing the JRFT prior to appointment (9.4).
  3. Passing the minimum eye sight and hearing test requirements and full medical in accordance with the National requirements.  This includes Psychological Screening.  
  4. Attaining the required vetting standard, potential to pass the Advanced Driver training course and acceptable PSD and absence records.

 

 

AFO's spend a significant portion of time providing a visible police presence and responding to non-firearms incidents.  On the Isle of Wight this also includes fulfilling duties in a hybrid role with Roads Policing.  To enable us to truly reflect the communities we serve, we are keen to recruit people from Black, Asian and other minority backgrounds as well as as female officers. You will need a wide range of skills and experiences which will enhance the services we deliver to the public including an understanding of cultural issues.

Officers wishing to be considered will need to apply, providing evidence against the College of Policing’s Competency and Values Framework (CVF).

Job Purpose

To be part of a team of Armed Response Vehicle (ARV) officers responsible for providing the Force with a spontaneous armed response to firearms incidents.  This team also provides essential services to the force through counter terrorism patrols and assisting Command Units via proactive policing towards achieving Tasking and Co-ordinating Group (TCG) objectives.

Essential Qualifications

Competent Constable from a Home Office Force.

To have successfully completed the initial firearms course.
