About us

Oxfordshire Youth Justice and Exploitation Service has an exciting opportunity for a Youth Justice Transitions Worker to join our friendly and supportive team. Oxfordshire Youth Justice & Exploitation Service is a multi-agency partnership committed to preventing and reducing youth crime and exploitation in the County of Oxfordshire. We are passionate about improving outcomes for children, families and victims of crime and working according to the Child First principles.

As a Transitions worker within our service, you will support those children on Orders nearing their 18th birthday and ensure a smooth transition across to Probation and Adult Services. You will also work with the older teenagers on their Orders.

You will have a sound understanding of child development, criminogenic risk and need, and youth justice statutory requirements around public protection. You will be an experienced practitioner with the ability to pick up a case-load and work effectively in a range of professional environments, including Court. You will care about the lives of some of Oxfordshire's most vulnerable children and adolescents and be committed, tenacious and persistent in striving for positive outcomes and ensuring their rights are upheld.

Our YJES workers participate in rotas for Court and Bail and you will be required to work occasional evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays to meet the needs of the service and our children and families. The service is county-wide and the role requires travel across Oxfordshire to see our children and families in their homes, local communities, school and community venues.

To be considered for this opportunity you will have a qualification/recognised professional qualification in Probation and/or Youth Justice. You will have a good working knowledge of both Youth Justice and Probation processes and recording systems.

About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Youth Justice and Exploitation Service for an experienced Probation Officer or Youth Justice Worker to join the team to work with those older adolescents who are transitioning across to Probation.

About you

You will have a passion for working with this cohort of young people and be confident in working with partners to manage risk and vulnerability.

You will be skilled at engaging older adolescents and families and have experience of both the Youth Justice and Probation Services and be confident in using recording systems and understand youth and adult legislative frameworks. You will have a sound understanding of adolescents and young adults involved in the criminal justice system and commit to practice according to the YJB's Child First principles. Whilst this role will focus on children aged between 17 - 19, we see children as children and work with them in accordance with their rights, regardless of how close they are to legal adulthood.

You will support young people who receive Youth Justice Court Orders and who turn 18 during the course of their Order and need to transition to adult services in both the community and in custody.

You will take part in the Court and Bail duty rota which includes Saturdays and Bank Holidays and as a service we cover the whole of Oxfordshire, so you would need a full driving license and access to a vehicle.

Please note that this role is fixed-term for 3 years, at which point the NPS funding for the role will be reviewed.
