About Us:

THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF MR K’s RECOVERY

Adult Social Care in Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories, where our passionate, caring and committed professionals do brilliant work every day.

A globe-trotting tourist called Mr K had a stroke. Hospitalised and very vulnerable, we put a unique plan together for him. He wanted to travel to Germany, but he wasn’t well enough. We placed Mr K in a care home to recover. Initially he didn’t like it, but our social worker worked hard to encourage him to stay. And he enjoyed the experience so much, he stayed for a year. As he was recovering, Mr K’s social worker got him an iPad and a phone to help him manage his finances and arrange his next trip. This enabled him to book his tickets to Germany. ‘Auf wiedersehen’ and he was gone!

The Role:

As a Social Worker with our Mental Health Placement Review Team you can make your own powerful contribution to Westminster’s success. Taking on need and risk assessments, you’ll work with service users to establish their eligibility, generate care and support plans, and take part in reviews. Identifying carers and their support plans, and pinpointing any safeguarding issues, we’ll expect you to maintain up-to-date records of all the work you do, and attend supervision sessions relating to your workload and professional development.

Committed to keeping abreast of current legislation, policies and procedures, you’ll attend local social work forums and contribute to social work and multi-disciplinary team meetings, ward rounds, liaison groups and case reviews. Contributing to our system of managing Mental Health Act requests, referrals and assessments will be another key task, work that will also involve being on duty as the rota requires.

You’ll have a number of additional responsibilities, including taking responsibility for maintaining key competencies. If qualified, you’ll also act as a Practice Assessor for Approved Mental Health Professional students and take part in our system of managing Best Interest Assessor assessments.

Please refer to the Job Description for more information

About You:

With a degree in Social Work or its equivalent, and registered with Social Work England, you’ll be an Approved Mental Health Professional and have a Best Interest Assessor or Practice Assessor qualification or be prepared to train for this. You should also have experience of working with adults with severe and enduring mental health problems who come from diverse ethnic and cultural groups, as well as their carers.

It's important that you possess well developed knowledge of the team’s statutory responsibilities, including child and adult protection procedures, a good understanding of current legislation and guidance, and experience of working with multi-disciplinary professionals. Capable of communicating clearly and effectively with service users, carers and other professionals, you’ll also have the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with multi-disciplinary teams and other external agencies.

Some of your tasks will be challenging and demanding, so you should be ready to work confidently in stressful situations. Flexible and capable of accepting constructive criticism, you’ll be skilled at prioritising your workload and prepared to occasionally extend your working day if necessary. Committed to treating all our service users with respect and dignity, you’ll also adopt a culturally sensitive approach to your work, one which considers the needs of the whole person.
