About Us:

THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF GIRO’S PERSUASIVE POWERS

The Environment & Communities team in Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories. We love it when our work touches lives.

Take Stepping to the Beat, our 3k walk, jog or run for people with learning or physical disabilities or Autism, their families and carers. It’s a life-affirming, music-based event Coreen and Claudia are massively proud of – and they were keen for people to spread the word. So, imagine how thrilled they were when one of our residents, Giro, did just that. Advocating for people with disabilities at a planning meeting for transport in London, he was proudly wearing his event medal. And he decided to use it to encourage others. As he passed it around the room, Giro inspired lots more people with disabilities to get involved. Infectious enthusiasm goes a long way here.

The Role:

As our Head of Environment Transformation, you can make your own powerful contribution to delivering a Fairer Environment for Westminster, as well as delivering projects, action and initiatives that will contribute to the wider global environmental agenda. Responding to some of the greatest environmental challenges of our time, you will build the partnerships and lead the influencing and engagement needed to support delivery of the Council’s response to the ecological and climate emergencies, and help drive our efforts to tackle air pollution and waste. You will deliver our commitment to address issues of climate justice and take action to protect wildlife and improve biodiversity. You will balance this against our statutory obligations and objectives as a local authority. It’s a complex challenge but there is significant political drive behind this new appointment and you’ll have the opportunity to make a personal impact on the way Westminster builds a more sustainable and resilient future.

This is a strategic partnership role, working with organisational leaders to embed and articulate the Council’s environmental aims and objectives. Your focus will be on fostering excellent working relationships with other council colleagues, partner organisations, diverse stakeholders and local communities. You’ll be supported by your own team and by other members of the Environment and Communities Directorate, who are dedicated to supporting this agenda, and delivering the Council’s commitment to be a net zero Council by 2030 and a net zero City by 2040.

Please refer to the Job Description for more information.

About You:

Success in this newly created leadership role will require the ability to communicate, collaborate and influence at all levels, as well as to build consensus and productive working relationships inside and outside the organisation. This should be supported by up-to-date knowledge of environmental sustainability and climate change issues, including an understanding of relevant environmental legislation, policies and working practices.  You’ll bring strong programme and project management expertise and a focus on delivery impact.  Able to work effectively under pressure, and prioritise and manage deadlines, you will also demonstrate sound judgement and political awareness.

The Council is committed to achieving diverse shortlists to support our desire to increase the number of staff from underrepresented groups in our workforce. We especially encourage applications from a global majority background and, while the role is open to all applicants, we will utilise the positive action provisions of the Equality Act 2010 to appoint a candidate from a global majority background where there is a choice between two candidates of equal merit. If you are from a Global Majority background you can self-declare this to the hiring manager as part of our positive action commitments.

What We Offer:

Westminster City Council’s strategy is to work towards a Fairer Westminster. A Fairer Westminster is one in which our communities are at the heart of our decision-making and help to determine the city’s future. At Westminster City Council, we pride ourselves on being an inclusive workplace and employer of choice. We encourage and welcome applications from people from all backgrounds and aim to have a workforce that, at all levels, represents the communities we serve.
